Trained by God
This week both delight and uncertainty swept the young people of our country as exam results were released.
It made me consider my own journey over the 15 years since I left school. In hindsight its quite clear to see where my plans met God's. You see I wasn't a carer girl. I didn't grow up with a burning ambition and come exam time this meant I lacked drive and revision suffered as a result. However just about earning the grades needed I attended college and as is always the way learnt as much about life as I did about Child Care (my chosen topic).
However after returning from college disillusionment with my job and becoming engaged to my husband meant my life took a sharp turn and I found myself working in an office far away from my qualifications. Here I worked for a newspaper, learning on the job and finding a new found enthusiasm I working in advertising. For 5 years I grow as a person, learnt new and unique skills and formed friendships that remain to this day.
But where was God? Can advertising find itself a place in God's Kingdom? At this time in my life I wasn't thinking about God's plan for my life but rather just moving along life's conveyer belt from one milestone to the next. Engagement to marriage. Children to Mortgage. As my relationship with God intensified and my want to follow his will for my life came more in to focus I pondered my years in media and how God could possible use them to further his Kingdom.
Over the last couple of years, 6 years after leaving the newspaper, a passion for Operation Christmas Child has developed leading to me taking the role of Area Co-ordinator and here God showed me how he paints with our lives. You see working in a newspaper office and working for Operation Christmas Child might seem a world apart but God wasn't training me to work in an office, he wasn't training me to sell advertising space or handle news stories, he was training me to bring children to Him through shoe boxes. He was training me not to sell but to inspire. To encourage, organise and equip others and most importantly share His good news.
You see my ability to stand up in front of a client and sell a product has become an ability to stand up and do presentations inspiring others to pack shoeboxes. My well practised telephone manor has given me the ability to communicate with our wonderful supporters and my fine tuned organisation skills mean I'm able to jungle all the balls needed to fulfil this responsibility. Operation Christmas Child might not require the hard selling techniques I was used to applying but all my training has been transferable into something so much more fulfilling.
So maybe your right where you want to be or maybe your pondering the turns your life has taken. Maybe your in ministry work or feeling unfulfilled in a corporate company. Maybe your excited about your future or feeling disheartened by exam results but you are never out of God's reach. Do you want your life to count for Him? Then tell him and follow him. Joyce Meyer talks about how she used to be so worried about making the correct decisions that in the end God said to her "don't worry, if you get lost, I'll find you." Proverbs 3: 5-6 says "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Open your life to him and then trust him that you are either exactly where he wants you or he is going to move you.
You see God has an amazing way of taking your life, its ups and downs, your wrong turns and life experiences and turning them in to skills to glorify Him and further His Kingdom
And if your wondering what God's doing or where you are in life, maybe your still in training for the role to come. And never forget that God's plans are always bigger and better than anything you can do on your own.
